Obstructed Airway Training

To see if you understand what to do when a child chokes, select one of the following:
  • See if the child can speak
  • Listen for breath sounds
  • Do back slaps
  • Wait until the child becomes unconscious
The following sequence is recommended to relieve an obstruction:

Send someone to activate the emergency response team and get the AED, then open the airway See if you can see an object, and if you can, remove it. Try to give 2 breaths, if not, retry to open the airway if the first breath doesn't make the chest rise. Then begin chest compressions and start cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths. If you are alone and about 2 minutes have passed, try to get the emergency response team to come and continue to provide emergency compressions and breathing. Great! Now you have completed the sequence of steps for a child who is choking and who then becomes unresponsive.
