Emergency University Announces Renewal of Multi-Year Contract with Norfolk Southern for WorkSafe™ CPR/AED Emergency Response Program

Worksafe™ Program Saves Lives by Preparing Employees to Respond to Sudden Cardiac Arrest Victims 100% of the Time, Providing Emergency Notification Mobile Apps, Ensuring AED Compliance

June 1, 2015 – Redwood City, Calif. – Emergency University, a pioneer in emergency response systems technologies and blended emergency medical training, has announced the renewal of a multi-year contract with Norfolk Southern Corporation (Norfolk, VA) for the Worksafe™ CPR training and AED maintenance program. Emergency University now provides emergency program management along all freight rail miles on the US Eastern Corridor and one-third (41,000 miles) of freight rail miles in the US.

The Worksafe™ Program was developed to save the lives of employees who collapse from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) while at work by:

  • Providing training programs based on medical research and behavioral science – thus ensuring all employees are prepared to respond to real-life emergencies and not just in classroom settings
  • Appointing team leaders as emergency responders and empowering them with the tools, plans, processes, training, structure, education and support they need to respond to an SCA victim
  • Equipping employees with a mobile apps to improve SCA response
  • Ensuring all AEDs are functional and comply with OSHA and state requirements

"Norfolk Southern is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our employees. This is why we are pleased to continue our investment in Emergency University’s comprehensive CPR/AED management and training program that has been proven to save lives. Our collaboration with Emergency University will provide us with support and resources as we continue to grow and strengthen our AED program," said Norfolk Southern Director of Medical Services Dr. Paula Lina.

Norfolk Southern has partnered with Emergency University since 2009. In addition to training employees and managing 170 AEDs, the contract includes the purchase of new HeartSine AEDs and three of Emergency University’s most powerful new smartphone applications EUCert!™, AED Ready™, and EUAlert!™.

"If companies want to save the lives of employees who have a sudden cardiac arrest at work, they must establish a sustainable program structure, provide response-focused training, and invest in the technology that immediately notifies trained responders," said Emergency University CEO Doron Braun. "Hanging an AED on the wall and certifying employees in CPR isn’t enough."

According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, SCA is a leading cause of death among adults over the age of 40 in the US and other countries. Each year in U.S. alone approximately 326,200 people of all ages experience an out-of-hospital SCA. Nine out of 10 victims die, despite the fact that more than 40 million people a year are trained in CPR and AED. Emergency University develops educational programs and technology to increase the response rate to SCA victims by fellow employees from two to 100 percent.

In addition to Norfolk Southern and other corporations, Emergency University manages the SCA response program for the Federal Aviation Administration. To date, Emergency University has overseen specialized training and orientation for more than 20,000 FAA employees at 198 locations, achieving an unprecedented 100 percent SCA response rate for the past five years.
